For Cadets interested in this program, please contact your DPO for information on how to become part of our Duke of Edinburgh group and meet with our group leader.  Many cadet activities can be used to qualify for the different section requirements at each award level.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award believes that not all learning happens in the classroom and our aim is to help equip young Canadians aged 14-24 for success in life. By recognizing all of the amazing things young people can do and learn outside the boundaries of formal education, the Award empowers them to discover hidden talents, develop untapped leadership potential, make a difference in their community and explore the wonders of the great outdoors.

The personal journey to earn the Award requires young people to look beyond their comfort zone and tap in to their sense of discovery. Participants set and achieve personal goals in activities they want to experience and develop, making each Award a unique journey.

There are three levels to The Award; Bronze, Silver and Gold:
A young person can progress through each level or enroll directly to either the Silver (15 years and up) or the Gold (16 years and up). Each level requires an increasing level of commitment and effort. Young people have until their 25th birthday to complete The Award. Once participants have completed their Award, they receive a pin and certificate to mark their achievement, and may be able to attend a ceremony within their Province or Territory (depending on Award level and ceremony availability). Gold Award ceremonies are only presided over by the Governor General of Canada or by a member of the Royal Family when their schedule permits.

THE LEVELS
Participants first select the level they feel is right for them. Some participants start at Bronze and work their way through all three, others start at Silver or Gold. Once the level has been selected participants must set out to achieve goals in four different program which get them involved with their community, explore the great outdoors, discover or enhancing a skill or hobby and engage in regular physical activity.  An Award is gained through individual improvement and achievement. Below is a brief outline of the difference between each of the three levels.

Learn more about all three levels and the commitment each requires by downloading the Summary of Conditions our at-a-glance reference guide to completing your Duke of Ed Award. (Click here for the black and white print version)

THE DUKE OF ED IS:
A MARATHON, NOT A  SPRINT
The Duke of Ed Award cannot be completed quickly. It’s all about sustaining an ongoing commitment in activities of choice, perseverance, and developing good habits. It takes commitment to see it through and earn something over the long term.

NON-ACADEMIC & NON-COMPETITIVE
The Duke of Ed is a personal challenge which recognizes that there are a lot of aspects to a well-rounded person, including achievements outside the classroom. Anyone who puts in the effort will receive the Award, so youth can collaborate with peers instead of competing with them. The Award is based on personal choice and reflects the abilities and interests of individual participants. No two Awards are alike!

RESPONSIBILITY
It’s up to each individual to ensure they stay on track and that all the Award requirements are met. It’s more than just completing the activities.

PROGRESSIVE
As youth grow, The Award grows with them. At Bronze they may need a lot of help. At Silver, they are more independent. By Gold they build their own experience.
FUN
The Award is fun. The activities that a young person selects reflect their own interests and passions. Also doing The Award great way to spend time with friends and making memories that will last forever. So enjoy the challenge!

BENEFIT OF DOING THE DUKE OF ED
GREAT FOR APPLICATIONS
Having your Duke of Ed Award looks great on post-secondary applications, scholarships, CVs and resumes. Whether applying for post-secondary or about to enter the work force, The Award shows commitment and achievement, as well as dedication to a variety of activities.
